CASE STUDY : Remarkable resolution of PANNUS. So this is 'Dog' as she is affectionately known! A beautiful GS that came to me for Zoopharmacognosy after being diagnosed by her Vet with Pannus (autoimmune disease resulting in blindness normally considered incurable). Dog was knocking into walls etc and needless to say, she and all her human family members were finding this rapidly progressive blindness extremely distressing (deteriorated within 3 weeks). They took Dog to the vet whom prescribed an immunosuppressant to be applied topically which Berenice and her family administered as directed. Berenice then contacted me to see if there was anything Zoopharmacognosy could do. After consultation with our Team Vet Annett, we decided it would be safe to offer plant extracts to see how/if they could help. Annett said that the key to resolution was to redirect the immune response. Within 10 days of the Zoopharmacognosy session, Dog's eyes became fully clear and to date her sight is fully restored. Berenice says: "Before zoopharmacognosy her coat was completely dry and dull and she was so skinny you could see and feel her bones. In a few days she’s basically back to normal with her eyesight fully restored, and her personality is bigger than ever , and even the vet is shocked, her words were she’s never seen any recovery that quick." It is important to note that the initial session starts the process of resolution in motion. It is the willingness of 'Dog' to engage and the dedication of her owner over the following week or so to continue offering the extracts that creates the best possible outcome - which happily in Dog's case was her eyesight being restored. So well done Team Dog!

We are delighted to announce that we have successfully sourced from the continent a lovely rich Organic Co2 Rosehip extract (Rosa canina). This type of distillation process ensures absolutely no solvent residue and the product (human grade) contains a broad level of constituents which includes high levels of Linoleic acid (essential fatty acid belonging to the omega-3 fatty acids group) which has been proven to inhibit the synthesis of prostaglandin resulting in reduced inflammation. Older animals that have joint issues or are arthritic and younger growing animals select Rosehip Co2. If you feel your dog or horse may benefit from Rosehip Co2, click here to purchase at our online shop. There are various forms in which you can offer Rosehips to your dog or horse - as whole hips, as a ground powder or as a Co2 extract. However when your dog/horse ingests the Co2 extract orally, the extract is then able to access the buccal membranes. This then facilitates the extract entering the blood stream directly thus avoiding enzymatic activity in the gut. This is Freda whom Gana is currently fostering from the My Lovely Horse Rescue branch in Cork, Southern Ireland. She is such a sweet little lady and very lucky to have been found and rescued and is now receiving much needed TLC. However, unfortunately Freda has been diagnosed with severe liver damage which may have been caused by Ragwort. As a four year old she also has the physical development of a two year old due to malnourishment. Throughout the Winter, Freda was averaging 8 dungs in 12 hours. After attending one of our online workshops, Gana began offering herbs using the Zoopharmacognosy approach. As a result of regular offering Freda is now averaging 4 dungs in 12 hours. Gana’s Vet felt the frequent dunging was a sign of liver damage and that the reduction in the no's of passing of dung is a strong sign that Freda's liver is on the mend. Freda has been selecting various herbs and oils over the last 2 months including the following: Lime essential oil, Neem fixed oil, Wormwood powder, Milk thistle powder, Slippery Elm powder, Marigolds dried herb, Liquorice root powder, Dandelion root dried herb (500g almost daily), Cleavers and Nettles. Nearly all of these extracts are selected to support and rejuvenate the liver. Freda’s selections make perfect sense! Please remember that aromatherapy oils are not suitable for use in Zoopharmacognosy This is Missy - a lovely gentle Cockapoodle that lives in the Burren and took the long trip up to Sligo to get some help with itchy skin - particularly her paws, vulva and ears. She engaged very quickly and was very clear in her selections and her MO was also very clear. She would come over to me, see what I had to offer, select and then go back over to Jayne to process until she was ready to check out another extract that I had for her. Early on in the session she selected Coconut oil and then proceeded to purge. Gut infections are often the cause of skin irritation and purging is a useful way of removing unwanted contents from the dogs stomach. We discussed removing cereal from Missy's diet which can often exacerbate gut infections and inflammation. Whilst she did select for inflammation (Peppermint & German Chamomile), interestingly enough she selected for Arnica C02(often selected for emotional and physical trauma) and initially orange blossom floral water followed by Neroli essential oil (often selected for grief). She processed for a long time (leaning on Jasmine ab as a support) on both and kept returning ever so often for a top up. During the follow-up offering Missy selected a topical application of green clay (often selected for fungal infections) on her vulva, anus and paw and itching ceased for a whole night which is unheard of! This is only the start of Missy's healing journey but I am delighted to say that Jayne has reported a significant reduction in itching and a lot done but more to do. The healing power of plants! If you would like to learn how to use Zoopharmacognosy to resolve numerous physical and emotional issues with your dog click on this Canine Workshop link Please note that aromatherapy essential oils are not suitable for this type of work. This wonderful picture of Cosmos was sent to us from Sinead - a participant on the Canine Level 1 online wksp. Cosmos's digestive system was struggling to maintain health shown by mucus and blood in his stools. Sinead had wormed Cosmos and taken him to the vet for treatment but the symptoms continued and deteriorated further. The Spirulina sample sent out in the Canine Workshop Workpack was demolished by Cosmos and after self-selecting Spirulina for a week his stools were healthy and lacked any mucus or blood. Another lucky dog whose guardian trusted his ability to self-select! You can see Cosmos's other pack members all below awaiting their turn at the 'Spirulina Bar'! In late November we held our first Canine Zoopharmacognosy workshop online where 8 participants and their furry friends all came together on Zoom to learn how to use the self-selection approach with their Dogs. Some were horse owners and had already completed our Equine workshop and are already using this approach with their horses but were keen to learn the different techniques employed when offering herbs and other extracts to dogs. (Click here for details of our next Canine Online Live 3-day Wksp) It was great fun with several different interactive elements ensuring no 'Death by Powerpoint' ! A learning pack sent out prior to the workshop contained herbs for human and their dog's to self select in order to experience first hand during the workshop how animals (and people's) taste buds adjust according to their needs. We also worked with Gunner onsite at Whitethorn Farm (Lab/retriever with stiffness/gut issues) and remotely with Pado in Cork (Belgium Shepherd with anxiety issues). All in all it was a great success with all humans (!) and dogs engaging with gusto and embracing the Zoopharmacognosy approach. Our next 3 day Canine Online Workshop is in June . Click here for more details. Very much looking forward to it! |
AuthorHi! My name is Carly and I head up the Whitethorn Team. I am also a life long lover of Dogs and Horses. When my mare was having regular episodes of Colic I looked around for a solution and found Applied Zoopharmacognosy (also called the self-selection method and free choice botanicals). I was so impressed that I trained in this fascinating effective herbal approach and have gone on now to train others. That was over a decade ago and I am now part of the Whitethorn Team and work with horses and dogs all over the world to help them restore emotional and physical health. As part of the support we offer, we also supply herbal remedies at our online shop along with providing workshops and one-to-one mentoring (Onsite & Online) on how to work with them. We truly hope that you enjoy and maybe learn a little from our blog. Carly and the Whitethorn Team, Sligo Ireland Archives
