Wintergreen essential oil (Gaultheria procumbens)
Dogs and Horses may select Wintergreen when presenting with the following symptoms:
- Aching muscles
- Pain
- Trapped nerves
WARNING - Dermal irritant
WARNING - Wintergreen contains salicylic acid which is on the FEI list of controlled substances
Wintergreen is commonly selected by horses for inflammation and nerve pain.
Wintergreen and Birch have very similar properties with high levels of methyl salicylate. Do not apply either to open wounds as they are dermal irritants.
WARNING - Contraindications: Wintergreen and Birch both have anti-platelet activity which means they are contraindicated when a horse is being given any anti-coagulant pharmaceutical preparations such as Warfarin.
