Peppermint (Mentha x piperita)
Animals may select Peppermint oil when presenting with the following symptoms:
- Colic - impacted
- Circulatory problems (see below)
- Digestive disorders
- Fungal infections - thrush, ringworm etc
- Hot inflamed conditions
- Inflammation and pain
- Itchy skin
- Nerve damage - numbness
Peppermint oil is a very versatile oil always worth having in the tack room. Not only is it often selected for digestive disorder such as Colic but also for inflammation and pain. Peppermint is extremely cooling and will take the heat and itchiness out of the skin when selected for topical application. CAUTION - do not apply to broken skin

When a horse is confined to box rest the resulting filling of the lower legs can be aided by Peppermint as it aids circulation when selected. Offer to apply topically with a diuretic such as Juniper Berry.
