Slippery Elm powder (Ulmus rubra)
Your animal may select Slippery Elm powder when presenting the following symptoms:
- Digestive issues - colic, constipation, diarrhoea
- Inflamed mucous membranes
- Stomach infection
- Tapeworms
- Ulcers
As the name suggest, Slippery Elm has a very high mucilage content which when selected coats the gut making it particularly effective for scour and diarrhoea. However, this also means that its gut-coating action has implications for ingested drugs - always seek veterinary advise before combining the use of Slippery Elm and drugs.
Dogs often take it dry whilst I have found horses can take it wet or dry. Give your horse the option by half wetting the scoop and allowing some of the powder to become moist and the other half to remain dry.
Sustainable harvesting - our Slippery Elm is harvested from an Organic farm in Kentucky, USA which is sustainably wild harvested from 800 acres of forest. The harvesters of these trees are taking the issue of sustainability very seriously and are currently cultivating some botanicals that they believe are at risk of over harvesting in the wild. They currently have 3000 Slippery Elm trees in cultivation and will have over 10000 trees being cultivated by the in the next 2 years on a group of USDA certified farms.
Slippery Elm trees are very fast growing and trees are only harvested in low percentages per acre to allow natural regeneration of the forest system. Once harvested the rough outer and the smooth inner bark are separated. The rough outer bark is used by the harvesters in their wood stoves and the inner bark is the part used in herbal medicine.
Top Tip !
Slippery Elm powder has drawing properties so may be used topically on wounds
