At Whitethorn Equine Health we offer the following plant extracts periodically to reduce and control worm burden. This tack room kit is composed of the following:
- Neem fixed oil 100g- Organic
- Neem power 100g - Organic
- Garlic essential oil 5ml
- Clove essential oil 5ml- Organic
- Thyme essential oil 5ml - Organic
- Wormwood powder 50g 5:1 concentrate
The essential oils listed above are also commonly selected for infection and abscesses therefore they have multiple uses in Zoopharmacognosy!
Along with offering the above we take quarterly faecal egg counts to ascertain level of burden. As a precaution we worm once annually for worms undetectable in dung samples such as bots. We favour a holistic approach to worm control implementing a variety of measures to this end. See below for measures to consider when applying the holistic approach.
Other measures you may consider taking to control worm burden are as follows:
- Rotational grazing
- Topping your fields regularly
- Dung picking
- Offer extracts for immune support
- Avoid intensive grazing
- Take dung samples for testing regularly
- Consider inter-species grazing
- Test and treat a new addition to your herd prior to admitting it into the paddocks - unless you commit to thorough dung picking
