Agnus castus dried berries
A horse may select Agnus Castus when presenting the following symptoms:
- Unseasonal heats, marish behaviour
- Cushings/PPID
Agus castus is also available as a powder and is listed in our Powders category
There is a significant amount of anecdotal evidence to suggest that when Agnus Castus berries (also called Chaste berries for obvious reasons!) are fed to a horse when not selected (ie hidden in feed) then a horse may become very aggressive. However, when these berries are offered and selected they have proven to be highly effective. Another reason why to give your horse the choice! In my experience when mare's select Agnus Castus berries they actually only need a small amount to get their hormonal system back into balance hence the smaller size purchasing option.
Agnus castus berries was also reputed to be given to Monks upon entering the monastery as they are considered an anaphrodisiac. This gave the berries the colloquial name - Monk's Pepper!
