Devil's Claw Root (Harpagophytum procumbens) - Cert Organic
Horses may select Devil's Claw when presenting with the following symptoms:
- Pain - injury
- Loss of appetite
- Joint, ligament and tendon pain - Navicular
- Parasites
- Inflammation - Laminitis, Arthritis
WARNING - Devil's Claw Root and Root Powder are on the FEI list of controlled substances.
Research has shown that Devil's Claw as an analgesic and anti-inflammatory is as effective as Phenylbutazone and cortisone without the side effects. This is due to its ability to inhibit Nf-kB (protein complex) which is responsible for instigating the production of inflammatory chemicals.
Devil's Claw Root powder can be assimilated more effectively into the blood system via the buccal membranes whereas the dried slices are ingested and subjected to digestive enzymes. Allow your horse to choose which method of taking it prefers - as then they can take in the most appropriate form for their condition.
Seek Veterinary advice if wishing to administer Phenylbutazone within 24hrs of a horse selecting Devil's Claw.
Top Tip!
Offer alongside the tannon-rich Devil's Claw, a sapponin-rich herb such as marigold (dried herb/macerate) or aloe vera to counteract the herbs bitters content if gastrointestinal disorders (such as ulcers) are suspected.
