Many horse-carers routinely use seaweed as an effective supplement due to the diverse range of vitamins and minerals that are found within. However, it is crucial to ensure that the harvesting site of any seaweed given to a horse is from an unpolluted area. This is due to the fact that Seaweed has the ability to draw and store some unwanted heavy metals such as lead and aluminium from the sea. Ours is supplied by a local concern called Seaweed Harvesters who harvest from the unpolluted waters of the Atlantic off the west coast of Ireland. It is tested annually for heavy metals and other undesirable elements by the Health Authorities.

Seaweed is extremely rich in minerals including Calcium, Iron, Iodine, Sulphur, Magnesium, Manganese, Phosphorous, Potassium, Copper, Zinc & Selenium as well as containing a wide range of vitamins. Of all the seaweeds Bladderwrack has the highest level of Iodine.

The dried plant is often selected for constitutional purposes whereas Seaweed Extract is selected for it's ability to bind with toxins thus removing them from the body.

TOP TIP!
Interestingly enough, some horses prefer the seaweed dried and some prefer it straight off the beach. When having your day out by the seaside, when the tide is out fill up a small plastic bag of fresh Bladderwrack seaweed and offer it to your horse. Avoid pulling the plant from the roots but prune the plant ensuring it is left to grow again.

Also consider:
  • Barley Grass pwdr - high in vitamins and minerals
  • Cleavers dried herb - cleanses the lymphatic system
  • Nettle dried herb- high in Iron and cleanses the body
  • Nettle pwdr
  • Rosehip Shells - high in vit C and collagen repair
  • Seaweed Extract - removes toxins
.Applied Zoopharmacognosy and offering plant extracts is not a substitute for veterinary care.
Consult your vet if you have any concerns for the welfare of an animal in your care
Always allow an animal to remove itself from an aroma and never put plant extracts in your animals feed
and always offer in a well-ventilated area
